Sam Bounds’ passion for lifelong learning and her deep commitment to community make her an inspiring figure at 鶹AV.

Originally from Greensburg, Louisiana, and a chemist by trade, her journey to serving as an aviation program manager at 鶹AV’s Raspet Flight Research Laboratory began unexpectedly.

“I always wanted to attend and graduate from Louisiana State University, but I wasn’t sure what I was truly interested in,” she reflected. It wasn’t until her freshman year that a simple question from her advisor changed everything: “What class do you always look forward to going to?” The answer was clear—chemistry.

After completing her degree, Bounds joined Albemarle Corp. in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where her passion for chemistry blossomed. “I was introduced to an entirely new world of chemistry and its impact on everyday life,” she said. Over the next decade, Bounds took on various roles, from nuclear magnetics resonance specialist to research chemist, and even managed strategic sourcing, where she procured $80 million in raw materials annually.

“After 10 years in the chemical industry, I learned that learning never stops, it’s okay to ask questions, and clear communication happens face-to-face—not via email,” Bounds said.

In 2018, she and her husband, Chris, faced a pivotal decision. Transferred to Albemarle’s headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina, they quickly realized how much they missed their families and the small-town environment. “We were climbing the corporate ladder, but it took a toll on family time,” Bounds said.

It became clear they needed to refocus their lives for their children. Later that year, the director of the 鶹AV Advanced Composites Institute position opened. “It was as if the perfect opportunity presented itself,” Bounds said. With Chris Bounds being a Mississippi native and Starkville being a mere hour’s drive from his hometown, the couple knew he had to apply.

Settling in Starkville has been a rewarding experience for the family. “I love that Starkville, although a college town, provides the small-town comfort I had growing up. My kids can explore freely and make memories,” Bounds said.

After a short stint working remotely, she now brings her extensive industry experience to Raspet to help improve processes and communication. “I aim to bring industry standards to our lab, enhancing productivity and collaboration,” she noted.

Outside of her professional commitments, Bounds is deeply involved in the Starkville community. She and her family attend Bridgeway Baptist Church, participating in worship and small groups. As an active board member of Caribbean Resource Ministries, Bounds’ family also takes part in annual mission trips to Belize.

Additionally, the two coach various youth sports through Starkville Parks and Recreation, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and dedication to their children, Maddie Claire and Eli.

“Starkville and 鶹AV both offer our family a tight-knit community feel and the work-life balance we craved in industry,” she said. “Everyone in the community becomes family. It’s a soul-comforting environment.”
