Three Minute Thesis research competition set for November at ¹ú²úÂ鶹AV

Graduate students are invited to participate in the Three Minute Thesis Research competition. and the deadline to apply is noon on Nov. 4.

Sponsored by ¹ú²úÂ鶹AV’s Graduate School and the Office of Research and Economic Development, Three Minute Thesis or 3MT is an opportunity to development presentation skills, as well as guide students in presenting to all audiences so they can understand the importance of research and how it positively affects others.   

3MT is a competition that challenges graduate students to present a compelling verbal presentation of their thesis/dissertation topic and its significance in just three minutes. 3MT develops communication skills and supports the development of graduate students’ capacity to effectively explain their research in language appropriate to a public audience.  3MT is not an exercise in trivializing or simplify research, but forces participants to consolidate ideas and crystalize research discoveries at any stage.

In the competition, presenters will have the opportunity to compete in one of eight categories, including a master student level and a doctoral student level in each of the following:

  • Arts and Humanities
  • Life and Biomedical Sciences and Engineering
  • Physics, Mathematics, Computations Sciences and Engineering
  • Social and Behavioral Sciences

The competition will be held over a two-day period, Nov. 14-15, in the Fowlkes Auditorium of ¹ú²úÂ鶹AV’s Colvard Student Union.  The preliminary rounds will be held Thursday, Nov. 14, with sessions from 9 a.m. until noon and 1-4 p.m.  Participants may choose the time and may leave after completing their presentation. 

The final round of the competition will be held on Nov. 15 from 1-3:30 p.m., when the eight finalists will compete to be the university’s grand champion.

The grand champion will then move on to a national 3MT competition.
