STARKVILLE, Miss.—One of twelve art exhibitions celebrating the Magnolia State’s bicentennial will be on display Sept. 1-29 at Mississippi State’s Cullis Wade Depot Art Gallery.
Located on the second floor of the university’s Welcome Center, “Narratives of the Land” features quintessential scenes of Mississippi landscapes created by artists Walter Inglis Anderson (1903-65), Ke Francis (1945-), William “Bill” Dunlap (1944-) and Eudora Welty (1909-2001).
Admission is free to all. Exhibit hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday, as well as two hours prior to kickoff for Saturday home football games.
On Thursday [Sept. 7], a 5 p.m. opening reception will be held in the Cullis Wade gallery. All are welcome to enjoy complimentary refreshments and view works on display.
“Narratives of the Land” is part of the Mississippi Museum of Art’s “Art Across Mississippi: Twelves Exhibitions, Twelve Communities,” a statewide series of exhibitions featuring works by regionally acclaimed artists, past and present.
“The museum’s collection of art is made more valuable every time Mississippians have encounters with it,” said Betsy Bradley, MMA director. “We are excited to share how, during the past 200 years, artists have helped us see our hometowns and each other with new eyes and increased sensitivity to the beauty around us.”
The “Art Across Mississippi” exhibition series serves as a precursor to “Picturing Mississippi, 1817-2017: Land of Plenty, Pain and Promise,” a landmark exhibition of more than 175 works of art interpreting the state’s rich artistic legacy over two centuries. Part of the MMA’s Annie Laurie Swaim Hearin Memorial Exhibition Series, the exhibition will be on display this Dec. 9-July 8, 2018, at the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson.
The 鶹AV exhibition and related events are organized by the university’s Department of Art, home to the Magnolia State’s largest undergraduate studio art program.
